Dealing with Obesity

Studies show more than one-half of all Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying extra weight puts you at risk for developing many diseases, especially heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Losing weight helps to prevent and control these diseases.

Obesity is a condition of excess body fat. It is important to know that no diet or weight loss formula works independently of an eating plan based on the Dietary guidelines given by the nutrition and health institutes. Severe overweight increases the risk for high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Obesity contributes to premature death. Of all obesity-related diseases, non-insulin dependent diabetes is most clearly and strongly associated with obesity. Women generally have more fat then men, but men appear to suffer a greater cardiovascular risk from fat than women do.

Factors that must be considered as contribution to obesity are: heredity, overeating, altered metabolism of tissue, defective or decrease thermogenesis (the process calories that are converted to heat), decrease physical activity without an appropriate reduction in food intake, and certain prescribed medications.

To lose weight is a behavior change related to diet and exercise. Weight loss reduces health risks in the e obese. Because obesity is a condition requiring continuous attention, any behavior changes required to maintain with loss must be life long.
